Editor and AI
formbase works like a Notion page — type with a slash menu, drag to reorder. Jotform uses a classic drag-from-palette UI and a card-by-card Cards view. Pick whether you’d rather type or drag. Where the products really split is AI. formbase puts generation, refinement, translation, and response analysis into one chat inside the builder, plus an MCP server for AI tools like Claude and Cursor — and because MCP actions are direct API operations, they don’t consume AI credits at all. You can also recreate an existing form by dropping a screenshot or PDF into the chat. Jotform’s AI Form Builder chat handles generate-and-refine; translation and submission analysis live elsewhere, and respondent-facing AI is a separate AI Agents product. Jotform does ship an MCP server, but it’s a separate server rather than unified into its builder chat. formbase keeps all of it in one builder chat, and because formbase’s MCP actions are direct API operations they don’t spend AI credits at all.
formbase AI runs on credits, with a model designed so you’re never forced into a higher subscription tier just to get more AI: Pro includes monthly credits and Free starts at $0, and either can top up with one-time credit packs that never expire. Jotform ties AI Agent limits to your subscription plan — Starter includes 5 AI Agents and 100 monthly conversations, scaling to 10,000 on Gold — and the AI Form Builder itself has no stated conversation cap. The AI Agent allowance scales with the tier you pay for.
Team collaboration on standard plans
Jotform’s Starter, Bronze, Silver, and Gold plans are all single-user — “1 user per team”. Adding a second seat means moving to Enterprise (custom pricing, contact sales). formbase includes unlimited workspace members on every plan. For any team where more than one person edits forms or reviews submissions, this is the biggest cost gap between the two.
Multilingual
Both products offer multilingual forms with automatic translation. Jotform adds languages under a Languages tab, auto-translates into 130+ languages, and shows a language switcher on the form. formbase ships a side-by-side translator with AI translate, RTL rendering for Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian, and outdated-row tracking that flags strings when the source changes — covering questions, options, and notification emails.
Analytics and abandoned-response recovery
Both products track form performance. Jotform’s Form Analytics (visits, conversion, traffic, device, location) is free on every plan, but it has no completion funnel and no per-link filter — field-level drop-off needs a Google Analytics 4 hookup. formbase’s Analytics tab is Pro, and goes further: a live Viewed → Engaged → Completed funnel, UTM-first traffic-source tracking, device breakdowns, and per-link filtering you can slice by date, device, and share link. Where the products really split is abandonment. Jotform’s Save and Continue Later is respondent-initiated — the visitor clicks Save and gets a resume link emailed to them. formbase Pro flips that: when a form is left incomplete past an adjustable delay and required-field threshold, it captures the partial automatically, emails the respondent, fires your integrations (Slack, Notion, webhook), and lets signed-in respondents resume on any device.
Webhooks and delivery health
formbase webhooks are HMAC-signed so you can verify every payload, with automatic retries on failure. Beyond webhooks, formbase keeps native integrations alive — refreshing OAuth tokens before they expire, auto-pausing a destination after repeated failures, and replaying failed deliveries in one click. Jotform webhooks have no payload signature — only a shared-secret URL parameter you check yourself — and no documented automatic retry or one-click replay.
Themes and dark mode
formbase stores separate light and dark themes per form; respondents pick at fill time or follow system preference. Jotform’s Form Designer is per-tier with custom CSS on higher plans — strong for one-off branded forms, but no paired light/dark variants out of the box.
What you get on Free
formbase doesn’t gate the high-value pieces behind a paid tier. Stripe payments, file uploads, legally-meaningful digital signatures, and repeating groups (repeatable sub-forms) all work on the Free plan, and every plan has unlimited fields per form. Jotform’s Starter (free) plan caps payments at 10 a month and uploads at 100 MB, signature widgets count against the per-form field limit, and forms are capped at 100 fields on Starter (250 on Bronze, 500 on Silver, 1,000 on Gold).
Privacy and data residency
formbase is an EU-based company (Formbase AS, Norway) operating under Norwegian and EU law. A Data Processing Agreement applies automatically the moment you collect personal data — no signature needed — and data is encrypted at rest and in transit (TLS 1.2+), with Standard Contractual Clauses or adequacy for any transfers. formbase AI runs on AWS Bedrock, where under the AWS Service Terms your data is not used to train models and is not retained after the request. If you need a signed BAA for HIPAA, that’s Jotform’s corner; for an EU-first GDPR posture, formbase is built for it.
